It's that time of year again… the time where we can’t believe how fast the year has gone, the time when we start getting organised for Christmas, and the time with the lead up to the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
In the last few days, we’ve seen a lot of Victoria’s Secret revelations. There’s been the reveal of the $2M ‘Fantasy Bra’, we’ve found out which musical guests will perform during the show. We’ve also uncovered which supermodels will strut their style down the 2015 catwalk (think Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner), not to mention what supermodel Lily Aldrige will wear.
Of course, these models are blessed with their genetics, but they do have a very strict and intense workout regime that focuses on lean muscle definition.
Here are some of their exercises and health and fitness tips…
According to Angel, Alessandra Ambrossio, you need to train like an Olympian in peak condition. “You work out as an athlete,” she says. “All your mind, all your ‘everything’ goes into it.”
One of their easiest and most popular cardio-toning exercises is skipping. With the models always on the run from fashion show to fashion show, country to country; bringing a skipping rope is effortless. Trainer Michael Olajide Jr, who trains the likes of Doutzen Kroes and Adriana Lima, says, “It’s the most convenient, efficient, and effective workout ever!” It may seem childish and old-school, but skipping can actually burn more calories than running. For a 50kg person, jogging 8km/h for 30 minutes will burn approximately 200 calories whilst skipping for 30 minutes will burn approximately 315 calories.
Another method that the Angels use is high-intensity interval training (HIIT). HIIT describes any sort of workout that alternates between intense bursts of activity and fixed periods of lower intensity actions, or even rest e.g. sprinting for 1 minute and then walking for two for 20-minute sections. HIIT workouts are great for those with a busy schedule, as a session can be squeezed in at any time. According to a study at the American College of Sports Medicine, in terms of aerobic capacity, just 2 weeks of HIIT can be the equivalent (in improving aerobic capacity) of 6 to 8 weeks of endurance training. And if that’s not enough, to the intense exertion caused by HIIT makes your body kick into repair super mode. This means that in the 24 hours after your session, you continue to burn more fat and calories.
But variety is key. Angel trainer, Justin Gelband, says to make sure you “always change your exercise as it gives your body a boost in direction and movement.” Of course there’s the standard core, arm and leg toning exercises, but the Angels are also renowned for partaking in workouts like boxing, soul cycle, Pilates, weight lifting and beautiful ballet, which many do 5 to 6 times a week. We shouldn’t strive to look like Victoria’s Secret Angels; as for many it just isn’t realistic. But what we should do is train and nourish our bodies properly so we can be the best versions of ourselves. As trainer Justin says, “everybody’s different and every body is different. Work out in a way that’s right for you, nobody else!” So keep at it, maintain a positive headspace and change your workouts to be your own Victoria’s Secret Angel.
